When Hollywood Met Family History: An Unexpected Story of Healing
Sep 12, 2024
Have you ever had one of those moments where you're doing something completely ordinary that suddenly turns extraordinary? Like when you're just asking someone about their grandmother's name, and before you know it, you're witness to a moment of profound family healing?
That's exactly what happened to me during one surreal weekend at the HBO Gift Lounge in Beverly Hills during Golden Globes weekend. (I said the Emmys in the podcast but I totally remembered that wrong. 🤦🏻♀️) Now, you might be wondering what the Golden Globes have to do with family history. Trust me – I was wondering the same thing as I stood in a luxury hotel suite, surrounded by celebrities, with a fake tree towering behind me and DNA kits artfully displayed around the room.
From Gift Lounge to Sacred Space
Unlike typical award show gift lounges where celebrities grab their swag, take an obligatory photo, and dash, Ancestry® had transformed our suite into something different. We weren't just handing out DNA kits – we were offering visitors something far more valuable: the chance to connect with their family story.
My colleagues and I spent that weekend helping various stars begin their family history journey. Dulé Hill discovered more about his Jamaican roots. Cheryl Hines shared a beautiful mother-daughter moment exploring her family tree. But it was an unexpected encounter with a young actor from HBO's Ballers that reminded me why I do this work.

The Power of One Story
What struck me most about this experience wasn't just that we found this young man's grandmother's name – it was how that discovery created a bridge between him and his father. Sometimes the simplest questions ("What was your mother's name?") can open doors we thought were permanently closed.
Your Story
Think about the names in your family tree that might hold similar power. Are there relationships that could be healed through shared discovery? Stories waiting to be uncovered that might bring your family closer together?
Story Seeds 🌱
Plant these conversation starters and watch your family stories grow.
- For Parents: "Tell me about your mother when she was young. What's a story about her that you've never shared with me before? What do you wish you had asked her while you still could?"
- For Grandparents: "What do you remember about the day each of your children was born? Were there any complications or close calls that shaped how you view family?"
- For Aunts/Uncles: "What was growing up with my parent like? Were there ever times when you drifted apart? How did you find your way back to each other?"
- For Siblings/Cousins: "Which family stories have you heard that seem to have different versions? Could we call [older relative] together to ask them what really happened?"
- For Multiple Generations: "If you could spend one hour with any family member who has passed away, who would it be? What would you want to know about their life? What would you tell them about how their story has influenced our family?"
Story Sparks 🔑
Unlock your family's hidden stories with these research techniques.
- Start With What You Know Start with what you know about yourself, your parents, and your grandparents. This is always step one. Remember, every expert genealogist started exactly where you are now.
- Reach Out to Family The second step isn't always obvious, but it's crucial: Call a family member who knows more than you do. Whether you're brand new to family history or have already built out quite a bit of your family tree, be willing to have that conversation. Even strained relationships can be mended over shared family history.
- Build Your Foundation Especially if your family lived in the United States, Canada, or England, make finding them in every available census your third step. Review the details about every member of the household, including all siblings of your ancestors – they might be the key to unlocking family stories no one else remembers.
- Look at the Original Records Where they exist, always look at the original image of any birth, marriage, or death certificates - don't just review the index. Those certificates often include parents' names. This detail can open up whole new branches of your family tree.
Remember, family history isn't just about filling in boxes on a chart or collecting records. Sometimes, it's about healing relationships, bridging generational gaps, and creating new connections where old ones have frayed. Whether you're in a Hollywood hotel suite or sitting at your kitchen table, these moments of discovery have the power to transform your family's story.
