A Life Changing Experience: From Orphaned Roots To Irish Abundance

podcast Jul 10, 2025
Diana O'Connor - Ireland

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to grow up with virtually no family stories, no extended relatives, and no sense of where you came from? What if your entire family history began and ended with your immediate family, leaving you with an aching void where your roots should be?

That's exactly how Diana O'Connor grew up. Her father was placed in foster care at just two years old when his mother died, separating him from his brothers and any connection to their family's past. When he died tragically at 38, followed by Diana's mother just eight years later, Diana found herself at 24 with almost no family history and a burning curiosity that wouldn't be silenced.

What started with a single onion-skin legal document and one desperate prayer would eventually lead Diana from having "absolutely nothing" to standing in Irish cemeteries, surrounded by the graves of ancestors she'd spent 40 years searching for, finally understanding what it meant to find "her people."

A Prayer and a $27 Gamble

"I literally said a vocal prayer. I said, 'Heavenly Father, please help me find you.' I was just crying... and all of a sudden I remembered something."

After four decades of searching for her grandfather Anthony O'Connor – including years of looking in all the wrong places because she believed he'd died in 1963 – Diana reached a breaking point. Here she was, working at FamilySearch as a genealogy professional, and she couldn't even find her own grandfather.

That's when she remembered advice from a colleague: try the county archives where he lived when he first immigrated. She filled out a simple form, sent $27 to the Westchester County archives, and waited.

What arrived a few weeks later changed everything.

"I get this big manila envelope in the mail and it's thick, it's got all of his records in it and, lo and behold, there is a picture of him... when I saw that picture again, tears just started flowing and what was so interesting was in his face, I saw my dad and his three brothers."

The Power of One Story

Diana's story isn't just about finding ancestors – it's about the transformative power of persistence and the miracle of connection. From a childhood with virtually no extended family to discovering cousins spanning from Ireland to New Jersey, her journey reminds us that even the smallest clues can unlock extraordinary discoveries.

"It's like you look at these records, you know, you finally get the records and you stare at the records and you imagine where they would be. And then all of a sudden, poof, you're standing in front of the grave and you just cannot even believe that you're there."

What makes Diana's story particularly powerful is how it demonstrates that family history research isn't just about the past – it's about creating connections that will shape future generations. As she puts it, she wants her children and grandchildren to grow up "without the void" that defined her early life.

Your Story

Think about the voids in your own family story. Are there relatives who seem to have disappeared from records? Family members whose stories you've never heard? Sometimes the very absence of information can become the key to unlocking incredible discoveries.

Diana's experience also highlights something crucial: even if you think you know nothing about your family history, you likely know more than you realize. That single legal document – the letters of administration – became the foundation for everything that followed.

Story Seeds 🌱

Plant these conversation starters and watch your family stories grow.

  1. For Elderly Relatives: "What's the earliest family story you remember hearing as a child? Who told it to you, and what made it stick in your memory?"
  2. For Parents/Grandparents: "Were there any relatives in our family who seemed to 'disappear' from family stories? What do you remember hearing about why they left or where they went?"
  3. For Aunts/Uncles: "What do you remember about our family's immigration story? Which relatives were the first to come to America, and what stories were passed down about their journey?"
  4. For Siblings/Cousins: "If you could ask one question of our ancestors who are no longer living, what would you want to know about their lives and choices?"

Story Sparks 🔑

Unlock your family's hidden stories with these research techniques.

  1. Look beyond death records for missing ancestors. Diana spent years searching for her grandfather's death certificate when he was actually still alive. Try immigration records, city directories, and census records to trace their movements instead of assuming they died.
  2. Don't ignore legal documents that mention extended family. Probate records, letters of administration, and estate files often list surviving relatives with their locations – creating an instant roadmap to lost family connections.
  3. Try alternate spellings and surname variations systematically. Diana's breakthrough came when she remembered that O'Connors sometimes appeared as Connors in records. Create a list of all possible variations and search each one methodically.
  4. Use local county archives for immigrant ancestors. Many counties maintain immigration and naturalization records that aren't available online. A simple letter or email with $25-50 can unlock a treasure trove of documents, photos, and family information.

Diana's journey from void to abundance proves that it's never too late to find your people. Sometimes all it takes is one document, one cousin connection, or one leap of faith to transform everything you thought you knew about your family's story.

Whether you're just beginning your family history journey or you've hit what seems like an insurmountable brick wall, remember Diana's words:

"Don't be afraid or don't be intimidated or don't run out of patience... even small efforts that you make, it might take a little bit of time, but it's so worth the effort when you see how things can turn out."
